Pip pip, cheerio! The beloved Welcome Tea for the incoming freshmen class of 2022 was a huge success! The sophomore class of 2020 warmly introduced their new "little sisters" to their new home away from home. Munching on delicious finger-sandwiches, fresh fruit, and sweet cookies, the NDA community bonded as we typically do -- through eating.
Along with the introduction of the class of 2022, the senior class of 2018 handed down their class color of red to the incoming freshmen. It was a heartfelt moment when senior class president, Francis Barrera, graciously passed on the color red to the inc-red-ible class of 2022. The NDA community was so excited to share in a delightful afternoon getting to know our future peers. Personally, I enjoyed talking to the incoming freshmen about my experience at my own Welcome Tea, and how I created a special bond with my "big sister." One of my favorite moments today was the fashion show where current students modeled NDA fashions dating back all the way to the 1950s! Trés chic! To truly welcome the incoming freshman to our beloved NDA, all students stood up to sing the beautiful Alma Mater. At the end of the tea party, the new freshmen were gifted their class T-shirts so they can represent their own NDA pride. I can't wait to see the new students of NDA in the hallways next year -- high school will be a blast! I was recently a part of NDA’s spring musical production of "The Sound of Music." This was my third year on stage crew, and I absolutely love being a part of the play production process. As a stage crew member, we are in charge of moving set pieces, organizing props, lighting, and building/painting sets. I would recommend stage crew to anyone who wants to be a part of the musical but doesn’t really want to be on stage or can’t commit to as much of a time commitment. Stage crew is an integral part of putting the play together. Without us there would be no show and that’s a great feeling to have in a production. Another great part of stage crew is is during spring break, we come to school for two or three days (if you’re not out of town) and paint sets without the actors. We blast music and just have a great time. On top of all this, you still have a chance to bond and spend time with all the actors in the show and by the end of the production, it's as though you have a new family. The musical is one of the most fun and memorable parts of my high school experience and it’s truly an opportunity I would recommend to anyone.
Last week we had student council in elections! I decided to run for a second time because I've really enjoyed it the past year. Student council is a great opportunity to really get involved in NDA and help plan fun events like dances and NDA Day. It allows people to connect more with their class and it definitely brought me and my other council members way closer together. Running for student council means writing and delivering a speech to your class. It's sometimes scary to give a speech in front of a bunch of people, but this year when I gave my speech, I felt completely comfortable in front of my class and delivered my speech with ease and no insecurities. I feel like my expierence really exemplifies the spirit of NDA, where girls don't worry about taking a risk like running for office or speaking in front of a group. Both running and being on student council is a really great experience, and I'm happy to say that I've grown as public speaker because of it!
The halls of NDA were alive with our spring musical, "The Sound of Music!" Produced and directed by Mrs. Duerr and the students of NDA, the show was a huge hit and sold out every night. "The Sound of Music" is a classic and NDA did an amazing job interpreting the show. From the singing to dancing to the acting, it was very obvious that everyone worked extremely hard to make it a great production. It was so much fun to see all of our talented classmates up on stage!
R2G2 (Robots, Rockets, Girls and Gryphons) participated in a VEX scrimmage at Windward this weekend. Team A went undefeated, with Team B right behind them, finishing second. Both teams really elevated game play with their incredible robots, but also with their positive energy and gracious professionalism. Congratulations, R2G2!
This year I got the chance to join painting. Originally, I was only in it for the VPA credits, so I had no idea what opportunities were coming my way, or of the doors I would soon open. Immediately, I felt so at home in the painting room, surrounded by a supportive group of familiar and new faces. I had taken mandatory art at my grade school, but I didn’t consider that to be much experience, yet I still found ways to succeed and most certainly improved on a passion I didn’t know I had. What appeals to me so much about art at NDA is the artistic freedom students are given. Many of my pieces have been big statements towards breaking down barriers of gender, race, and sexuality in our world today. I continue to look forward to starting new projects and learning something new, not just about art, but about myself, too, every class.
This week, the Art Appreciation class will present its socio/political art exhibit, "Exposed," in Rosa Mystica Hall. The show will also feature work from the Photography and AP Studio Art classes. Join us for the reception Thursday, April 26, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Twenty NDA students are spending spring break touring schools in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., with college counselor Ms. Hulsy. Here they are in Boston with Ms. Paetzold '85 and Samantha Costanzo Carltone '11.
NDA's Robotics team advanced to tournament finals at the 4th Annual All Girls VEX Showcase at La Reina High School this weekend. The team also earned the Innovate Award from a panel of judges. The Innovate Award recognizes a specific, unique piece of engineering that exemplifies thinking outside of the box and innovative engineering design. Congratulations to the robotics team!
What better way to celebrate Pi day than with pie? Thanks to Mr. Janken and his Calculus classes for the sweet treat!
