This summer, I did more than just watch all nine seasons of “The Office.” Things started off with a bang when seven of my friends and I left for Costa Rica hours after our last final exam. We stayed in the home of one of the girl’s relatives in Guanacaste on the West coast. Every morning, three of us would wake up, grab our surfboards, and catch some of the best waves I’ve ever seen. One of the most unforgettable things we did was bike around the neighborhood where we were staying. The bikes were unsafe and rusted, but we rode over the gravel roads until we reached the beach. There, we pedaled in huge figure eights in the sand, surrounded by lush forest and glittering sea. I was heartbroken when we had to go home.
I had a summer job at Noah’s Bagels waiting when I returned. Every day, I donned my khaki pants, hideous nonslip shoes, stained apron, and visor and clocked in to work for at least six hours. Once, the health inspector came an hour before closing and told us that we had to fix one of our coolers. I spent the next three hours washing dozens of tubs that usually hold cream cheese. Although the days were long and tiring, it was definitely worth the experience and the money. I understand the value of kindness and a dollar much more than I could’ve ever imagined.
Each summer is filled with unique experiences that I am so grateful for. No matter what I do in summers to come, I will always remember this summer as one of the very best.
